An ATV safari and a buggy safari look almost the same in holiday photos: pine forest, clouds of dust, muddy faces and big smiles. On the day, they feel quite different. On an ATV (quad bike) you ride alone, steer with handlebars and use your body to keep the vehicle balanced. In a buggy you sit in a seat with a seat belt, hold a steering wheel and share the ride with one other person under a protective roll cage.
This guide explains the real differences between ATV and buggy safari tours in Türkiye, who each one suits, and what to check before you book. It is based on the quad and buggy safaris we offer in Antalya, Side and Alanya. Minimum ages, duration and what is included are set by each tour operator, so we show clearly where details can vary.
ATV vs buggy safari: the short answer
Choose an ATV (quad) if you want to control your own vehicle, feel every bump and don't mind getting very dusty and muddy.
Choose a buggy if you are travelling as a couple or with a teenager, prefer a car-like steering wheel, or want a more stable and less tiring ride.
Can't decide? On many tours you choose your vehicle at the base camp, and quads and buggies follow the same route, so a mixed group stays together.
ATV vs buggy: side-by-side comparison
ATV / quad safari | Buggy safari | |
|---|---|---|
Seats | Usually one rider per quad | Two seats side by side |
Controls | Handlebars, throttle and brake levers | Steering wheel and pedals, like a small car |
Protection | Helmet; you sit on top of an open vehicle | Helmet, seat belt and a steel roll cage |
Physical effort | Higher: you balance with your body on rough ground | Lower: you stay seated and strapped in |
Feeling | More direct, more adrenaline | More stable and relaxed, but still bumpy |
Dust and mud | You get very dirty | You still get dirty, because the sides are open |
Best for | Solo travellers, confident riders, thrill seekers | Couples, parents with teenagers, first-timers |
Age limits, passenger rules and the exact route depend on the tour operator. Always read the "Before you go" section of the tour you book.
What is an ATV safari?
ATV stands for "all-terrain vehicle". In Türkiye most people call it a quad or quad bike, so an "ATV safari" and a "quad safari" are the same tour. A quad has four wide tyres, a motorbike-style seat and handlebars. You sit on top of the vehicle, not inside it.
On rough ground you shift your weight to keep the quad steady, especially in bends, on slopes and in deep mud. This is exactly why many people love it: it feels active and close to the ground. It also means your arms and back work harder, and you will feel it after the ride.
What is a buggy safari?
A buggy (sometimes called a dune buggy or UTV) is a small, open off-road car. On the tours we offer, buggies are two-seaters with a steering wheel, automatic transmission and a roll cage around the seats. You wear a seat belt and a helmet, and the second seat is for your partner, friend or child.
A buggy feels more stable than a quad and needs less strength, so it suits people who drive a car at home but have never ridden a motorbike. It is still a real off-road ride: expect bumps, splashes and plenty of dust.
Which is better for you: ATV or buggy?
Neither is "better". The right choice depends on who you travel with and how you like to drive.
Couples
A buggy lets you share one vehicle and experience the ride together. If you both want to drive, book two quads, or ask the guide whether you can swap drivers at the rest stop.
Families with children
Children cannot drive, and many operators also set a minimum age for passengers. On one Side tour we offer, drivers must be at least 17 and passengers at least 12. For a parent with a teenager, a buggy is usually the better choice, because the child sits next to you with a seat belt. Check the age rules and child prices on the tour page before booking.
Groups of friends
Groups often mix both: those who want speed take quads, the others share buggies. The vehicles drive in one convoy on the same track, so nobody misses anything.
First-timers and nervous drivers
Take a buggy. The controls feel familiar and you stay seated and strapped in. On the tours we checked, a safety briefing and a short practice drive come before the main track, so you can get used to the throttle and brakes. On the Side 4-in-1 combo tour, beginners who prefer not to drive can ride with an instructor.
Adrenaline lovers
Take a quad. You control it alone, you feel the terrain directly, and water crossings and rocky climbs are more exciting when you balance the vehicle yourself.
Where can you do ATV and buggy safaris in Türkiye?
The Turkish Riviera around Antalya is the best-known region for quad and buggy safaris. The tracks run through the pine forests and foothills of the Taurus Mountains, a short drive from the resort hotels. On Maxtoria you can currently book:
Antalya: the Antalya Quad and Buggy Safari Tour follows dirt tracks, forest trails and shallow river crossings in the Taurus foothills, with a rest stop at a mountain stream.
Side: the Side Quad and Buggy Safari Tour crosses the pine forest behind the coast, with mud pools and rocky climbs, and has showers and changing rooms at the base camp.
Alanya: the Alanya Buggy and Quad Safari Tour and the Avsallar Quad and Buggy Safari use prepared safari tracks with forest and mountain views.
All of these tours include hotel transfers. Quad and buggy safaris are also popular in other resorts such as Kemer, Marmaris and Fethiye, and the tours available on Maxtoria change during the year.
Safety, age limits and driving requirements
Here is what the tours we offer say. Use it as a guide and confirm the rules on the tour you choose.
Driving licence: not required, and no off-road experience is needed. On the Antalya tour, both quads and buggies are fully automatic.
Minimum driver age: 16 or 17, depending on the operator.
Passengers: rules vary. One Side operator accepts passengers from 12 years old.
Health: operators do not recommend these tours for pregnant travellers or people with back problems. Some also mention heart problems.
Equipment: a helmet is included. Goggles and a bandana are usually not included, but they help a lot against the dust.
Insurance: the tours list insurance cover. Check the tour page for the details.
On the trail you drive in a convoy behind a guide; on the Side tour, guides ride at both the front and the back of the group. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, don't overtake, and follow the guide's hand signals. It is not a race: drive at a speed you can control, especially in bends and on wet ground.
How long does an ATV or buggy safari take?
The quad and buggy safaris we offer are listed at about 1.5 to 2 hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off come on top of that, so plan for more time in total, depending on how far your hotel is from the base camp. A typical tour looks like this:
Pickup from your hotel by minibus.
Arrival at the base camp, helmets and a safety briefing.
A short practice drive on flat ground.
The main ride in convoy: forest trails, dust, mud and water crossings.
A rest and photo stop about halfway.
Back at base, a quick clean-up (some camps have showers) and the transfer back to your hotel.
What to wear and what to bring
You will get dusty on dry days and muddy at the water crossings. Dress for it:
Old clothes you don't mind getting dirty; light long sleeves protect you from the sun and dust.
Closed shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are a bad idea on a quad.
Sunglasses or goggles, and a bandana or scarf for your nose and mouth.
Sunscreen.
A towel and a full change of clothes for the ride back.
Swimwear, if your tour has a stream or swimming stop.
A dust-proof or waterproof case for your phone, and as few valuables as possible.
Some cash for drinks and for photos or videos, which are usually sold separately.
Standalone safari or a combo tour?
If you want a full day of action, some tours combine a quad or buggy ride with white-water rafting and a zipline in Köprülü Canyon National Park. Examples are the 4-in-1 combo tour from Side (rafting, quad or buggy, zipline and jeep safari) and the Köprülü Canyon rafting, buggy safari and zipline tour from Antalya. These are long days with lunch included. A standalone safari is much shorter and fits easily into a beach holiday. Read more in our guides to rafting in Köprülü Canyon and zipline tours in Antalya.
Frequently asked questions
Is an ATV the same as a quad bike?
Yes. ATV means "all-terrain vehicle", and in Türkiye it usually refers to a four-wheeled quad bike. An ATV safari and a quad safari are the same activity.
Do I need a driving licence for an ATV or buggy safari in Türkiye?
Not on the tours we offer. No licence or off-road experience is needed, and you get a safety briefing and a short practice drive before the ride. You do need to meet the operator's minimum driver age, which is 16 or 17 on our tours.
Which is safer, an ATV or a buggy?
A buggy gives you more protection, with a seat belt, a roll cage and a more stable ride. Both are safe for beginners when you follow the guide and drive at a speed you can control.
Can children join a quad or buggy safari?
Children cannot drive. Some operators allow older children as buggy passengers; on one Side tour, passengers must be at least 12. Check the age rules on the tour page before booking.
Can two people ride on one ATV?
This depends on the operator. Buggies are built for two people, so if you want to ride together, a buggy is the easier choice.
How long is a quad or buggy safari in Antalya?
The quad and buggy safaris we offer in Antalya, Side and Alanya are listed at about 1.5 to 2 hours, plus the time for hotel transfers. Combo tours with rafting and zipline take a full day.
What should I wear for an ATV or buggy safari?
Wear old, comfortable clothes and closed shoes. Bring sunglasses or goggles, a bandana against the dust, sunscreen, a towel and a change of clothes.
Will I get dirty?
Yes, and that is part of the fun. Expect dust on dry tracks and mud at the water crossings, whether you drive a quad or a buggy.
Is a quad or buggy safari suitable during pregnancy or with back problems?
No. The operators we work with do not recommend these tours for pregnant travellers or people with back problems. If you have another health condition, ask before you book.
