Pamukkale Tour Guide: Day Trips from Antalya, Side and Kemer

Planning a Pamukkale day trip? What you see at the travertines, Hierapolis and Salda Lake, how long the drive takes, what's included and tips for the day.

8 min read

Pamukkale is the hillside of white travertine terraces in Denizli province, inland from the Mediterranean coast. Warm, mineral-rich spring water has flowed down the slope for thousands of years and left behind shelves of white stone and shallow pools. Directly above them are the ruins of Hierapolis, a Roman spa city. Together, Hierapolis and Pamukkale are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you are staying in Antalya, Side or Kemer, the usual way to visit is a guided day trip with hotel pickup. This guide explains what you see, how long the day really is, what the tours include and leave out, when to go and what to bring.

What You See at Pamukkale

The Travertine Terraces

Pamukkale means "cotton castle" in Turkish. The white terraces are made of travertine, a stone deposited by calcium-rich spring water as it flows down the hill. Visitors walk up a marked barefoot path through shallow pools of running water; other parts of the terraces are closed to protect them. The water is warm near the springs and cools as it spreads across the lower pools.

The white surface reflects a lot of light. On a sunny day, sunglasses and sunscreen make a big difference.

Hierapolis

The ancient city of Hierapolis sits on the plateau above the terraces. It grew as a spa town around the same springs. The highlights most guides show you are the large theatre cut into the hillside, the colonnaded main street, the Roman baths and the necropolis, one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia. There is a lot of walking on uneven ground, so plan on doing Hierapolis in shoes and the terraces barefoot.

Cleopatra's Antique Pool

Next to the ruins is a thermal pool where you can swim over marble columns that fell into the water in an earthquake centuries ago. It is optional and needs a separate ticket bought on site. None of the day trips listed below include it, so bring swimwear, a towel and money if you want to go in.

Salda Lake (on Some Tours)

Several trips from Antalya and Side also stop at Salda Lake, near Yeşilova, on the same day. It is known for its white mineral shoreline and turquoise water, and is often called the "Turkish Maldives". Tours give about an hour to an hour and a half there, for photos, a walk along the shore and a swim where it is permitted.

How Long Is a Pamukkale Day Trip?

Long. Pamukkale is several hours inland from every resort on the Antalya coast, so a day trip means roughly 8 to 10 hours on the road in total. A typical day looks like this:

  • Before dawn: hotel pickup. The time printed on a listing (between 04:00 and 06:30 on the tours below) is when the activity starts; your pickup is usually earlier and is confirmed after booking.

  • Morning: drive inland over the Taurus Mountains, with a breakfast or coffee stop

  • Late morning or midday: Salda Lake on the tours that include it, and lunch near Pamukkale

  • Afternoon: the terraces and Hierapolis, with a guided introduction and free time

  • Evening: the drive back, sometimes with a dinner stop, and hotel drop-off late in the evening

One reviewer notes that the journey is long, and one operator notes the trip is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. If that sounds like too much, consider breaking the journey and staying a night near Pamukkale instead.

Economy Package or Tickets Included?

On an economy package you pay the Pamukkale–Hierapolis entrance fee yourself at the gate, so the lower tour price is not the full cost of the day. If you would rather not deal with payment on site, choose a tour or option with the ticket included. Either way, the pool ticket and drinks are separate.

Rules on the Terraces

  • Shoes off. Footwear is not allowed on the travertines because it damages the surface. Bring a small bag to carry your shoes.

  • Stay on the marked path. Only part of the terraces is open to walk on.

  • Watch your step. The wet stone can be slippery in places and uneven underfoot.

  • Bring ID. One operator asks guests to carry a passport or ID card for the site entrance.

Best Time to Visit Pamukkale

The site is open all year, but the experience changes with the season:

  • Spring and autumn: the most comfortable weather for a long day of walking in the sun

  • Summer: hot, with strong glare from the white stone; bring a hat, sunglasses and plenty of water

  • Winter: much cooler inland than on the coast, so bring warm layers for the ruins and the drive

For more on weather across the region, see our guide to the best time to visit Antalya.

Can You See the Hot Air Balloons?

Balloon flights over Pamukkale take off around sunrise. Day trips from the Antalya coast arrive in the middle of the day, so you will not see the balloons on these tours. If a balloon flight is important to you, plan to stay overnight near Pamukkale and book the flight locally.

What to Bring

  • Swimwear and a small towel, if you want to paddle in the pools or swim at Salda Lake or Cleopatra's Antique Pool

  • Shoes that are easy to slip off, and a bag to carry them

  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses

  • Water and a snack for the drive

  • Cash for drinks, the pool ticket and, on economy packages, the entrance ticket

  • A passport or ID card

  • A layer for the early start and air-conditioned coach
