White-water rafting is one of the most popular adventure days on the Antalya coast, and almost all of it happens in one place: the Köprüçay River, where it runs through Köprülü Canyon National Park in the Taurus Mountains. You don't need experience, you don't steer, and most people come back soaked, tired and grinning. This guide explains how rafting works, what a day out from Antalya, Side, Manavgat, Belek, Alanya or Kemer involves, how difficult it is, what to wear and bring, and how to raft responsibly.
Rafting near Antalya at a glance
Where: the Köprüçay River in Köprülü Canyon National Park; from Marmaris, the Dalaman River instead.
Route: Maxtoria's Köprüçay tours describe a run of roughly 13–14 km, usually about one and a half to two and a half hours on the water.
The day: a full day with hotel transfer, safety briefing, rafting and lunch by the river; many tours add jeep, buggy and zipline.
Who can go: no rafting experience needed; the youngest age most listings give is 6, and the guides decide on the day.
Usually extra: drinks, photos and videos, and on many tours water shoes.
Rafting means paddling down a river in a large inflatable boat, a raft, with a small group and a guide. The raft is wide, very buoyant and hard to tip over, which is why it works for beginners. You sit on the side tubes, wedge your feet in, and paddle when the guide calls out a command such as forward, back or stop. The guide sits at the back, reads the river and steers; your job is to paddle together and follow the calls.
The river alternates between calm stretches and rapids: sections where the water speeds up over rocks and drops, creating waves and splashes. That is what makes rafting an outdoor adventure rather than a boat ride. You will get wet, you will work a little, and the boat will bounce.
Köprülü Canyon National Park was established in 1973 and covers roughly 366 km² in the Manavgat district of Antalya province, inland from the coast. The canyon runs for about 14 km, with rock walls over 100 metres high.
The Köprüçay, known in antiquity as the Eurymedon, rises in the Taurus Mountains and is largely fed by springs, which keeps the water clear, green and cold even in the middle of summer. Its mix of lively rapids and long calm pools is what makes it such a well-known rafting river.
The park protects pine forest and a natural stand of Mediterranean cypress, framed by the peaks of the Taurus. Rafting routes pass the Oluk Bridge, a single-arch Roman bridge from the 2nd century AD, built without mortar on the old road up to the ancient city of Selge. It is one of the most photographed spots in the canyon.
If you are staying in Marmaris, Maxtoria's rafting trip runs on the Dalaman River instead, starting near the Akköprü reservoir. The listing describes a route of about 12 km with livelier and gentler sections, and includes breakfast as well as lunch.
Every Köprüçay tour listed on Maxtoria includes a round-trip hotel transfer to the canyon, so you don't need a car. The tour itineraries allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half for the drive from Side and Antalya, and about two hours from Alanya; from Kemer the route passes Antalya first. Pickup is earlier than the listed start time, and your exact pickup time depends on your hotel and is confirmed after you book.
Staying in Manavgat or Belek? Book a tour from the nearest area and check its listing for the pickup zone. The rafting pages for each area are gathered at the end of this guide.
Programmes differ from tour to tour, and combo tours fit other activities around the rafting, but a Köprüçay day usually follows this pattern:
Hotel pickup in the morning, then the drive into the mountains.
Arrival at the rafting base in the canyon, where you leave your things.
Safety briefing and equipment fitting: helmet, life jacket and paddle, plus the paddle commands.
Rafting: usually about one and a half to two and a half hours on the river, with rapids and calm stretches.
Breaks: many routes stop in calm water for a swim or photos, where the guides allow it.
Lunch by the river at the base or a riverside restaurant.
Return transfer, with activities usually finishing between 16:00 and 16:30.
Most of the Köprüçay tours Maxtoria lists are sold as suitable for beginners, with lively rapids between long calm stretches rather than big drops. Some combo tours are marketed as more intense, with harder paddling.
Rivers are graded on the International Scale of River Difficulty, from Class I (easy, moving water with small waves) through Class II (straightforward rapids) to Class III (irregular waves that need good boat control) and higher. Grades are not fixed: the same rapid can feel a class harder in spring, when snowmelt raises the water, than in late summer. Operators describe the Köprüçay differently, and none of Maxtoria's Köprüçay listings gives a grade, so think of it as a guided beginner-friendly river whose character changes with the water level.
Yes, on guided beginner routes. None of Maxtoria's rafting listings asks for previous experience: you get a safety briefing before you set off, several listings describe an instructor in each raft, and the guide chooses the line through each rapid while the group paddles on command. That does not make rafting risk-free. It is a physical outdoor activity, so listen carefully and follow every instruction.
Some Maxtoria listings say that non-swimmers can take part, and none asks for a swimming certificate, but it depends on the tour. Everyone wears a life jacket and a helmet, which keep you afloat and protect your head, yet they are not a guarantee against injury. If you can't swim or are nervous in water, say so before you book and again to your guide, who can seat you accordingly.
Item | What it does | Who provides it |
|---|---|---|
Raft and paddle | The boat and your paddle for the guide's commands | Operator |
Helmet | Protects your head from rocks and paddles | Operator |
Life jacket | Keeps you afloat if you end up in the water | Operator |
Wetsuit | Keeps you warm in cold water | Rental at extra cost, where offered |
Water shoes | Grip and protection on wet rocks and in the raft | Your own; some tours sell or rent them at the base |
A helmet only protects you if it sits snugly, and a life jacket only works if it is tightened so it can't ride up over your chin. Ask the guide to check both before you set off.
Round-trip hotel transfer (on the Dalaman trip, transport to the rafting facility)
Rafting guide and safety briefing
Rafting equipment: raft, paddle, helmet and life jacket
Lunch by the river
Insurance on most tours
Drinks, which are sold at the base or restaurant
Photos and videos of your raft
Water shoes on many tours, and wetsuit rental where offered
Personal expenses and tips
Lunch is a hot meal or an open buffet at the rafting base or a riverside restaurant, depending on the tour, and drinks are paid for separately. Each tour page lists exactly what its price covers.
Most rafting tours on Maxtoria are combos: the rafting plus a jeep safari, a buggy or quad ride and a zipline flight over the canyon, all in one day with one transfer and one lunch. A rafting-only tour spends longer on the river and has a calmer pace. Where combo tours state a limit, buggy and quad drivers must be at least 16, and children ride as passengers.
Rafting: a team paddling an inflatable raft down a river with rapids.
Canyoning: moving through a canyon on foot, climbing, jumping and swimming, usually without a boat.
Jeep safari: an off-road drive on mountain and forest tracks; see our jeep safari guide.
None is better than the others: pick by the kind of day you want. Rafting and jeep safari combine well because both happen in the same mountains.
Guided rafting on a beginner route is a well-established activity, but it is still an adventure sport and river conditions vary. These habits matter most:
Listen to the whole safety briefing and ask if anything is unclear.
Keep your helmet and life jacket on and fastened the whole time you are on or near the water.
Follow the guide's paddle commands and stay seated with your feet wedged in.
If you fall in, float on your back with your feet up and pointing downstream, and never try to stand up in fast water; wait for the guide's help.
Swim only where and when the guide says, and stay with your raft and your group.
Tell the operator about any health condition, injury or pregnancy before you book.
The guides and the local operator decide whether to run, shorten or change the route on the day, depending on the weather and the river. If the operator cancels for weather, you can move your booking to another day or take a full refund, as explained in our cancellation and refund policy.
You are paddling through protected nature, so leave it as you found it: take all your rubbish back with you, don't damage plants or climb on fragile rock, keep noise down near wildlife, stay on the paths used by your group and follow the park rules and your guide's instructions.
