Marmaris is a resort town on Turkey's southwest coast, set in a deep, pine-covered bay where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean. The best things to do in Marmaris are mostly on or by the water: full-day boat trips around the bay, swimming in coves such as Turunç and Kızkumu, and water sports along the seafront. On land, there is a compact old town with a castle and bazaar, jeep safaris into the Bozburun Peninsula, a busy nightlife scene, and day trips as far as the Greek island of Rhodes.
This guide lists 25 things to do in Marmaris, with how much time each one needs, who it suits and which ones are easiest without a car. If you are looking for a list of sights, beaches and villages rather than activities, see our companion guide to the best places to visit in Marmaris.

Things to Do on the Water
Most Marmaris holidays revolve around the sea. The bay is sheltered, the water is generally calm in summer, and many of the prettiest coves are easier to reach by boat than by road.
1. Take a Full-Day Boat Trip Around Marmaris Bay
A boat trip is the most popular of all Marmaris activities, and for good reason: it is the easiest way to see the coves around the bay without driving winding roads. Boats leave the harbour in the morning and stop at several bays for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing, with lunch served on board. Routes vary by operator and weather, but often include the area around Paradise Island, Aquarium Bay, Turunç and Amos.
Time: full day; boats usually leave around 10:00
Good to know: check what is included before booking. Some trips include hotel transfers, a barbecue lunch and unlimited soft drinks, while alcoholic drinks and snacks may cost extra.
Best for: almost everyone, including non-swimmers who can stay on deck
Compare routes and inclusions on our Marmaris boat tours page, or see a typical option such as the Marmaris boat tour with BBQ lunch and soft drinks.
2. Join a Pirate Boat Trip with the Kids
Pirate-themed boats are the family version of the classic Marmaris boat trip. Alongside swim stops, they add music, games and a foam party on deck. The Marmaris pirate boat trip, for example, visits Paradise Island, Phosphorus Cave and Turunç, with lunch and unlimited soft drinks included.
Expect a lively, noisy atmosphere. Couples looking for a quiet day at sea will be happier on a standard boat trip.
3. Spend a Day at the Marmaris Beaches
You can swim in the town centre at Uzunyalı (Long Beach) and the public beach, both within walking distance of most central hotels. For clearer water and a quieter setting, head out of town:
İçmeler: a broad beach and promenade, reachable by minibus or seasonal water taxi
Turunç and Kumlubük: clear water in mountain-backed bays, reached by a winding road south of İçmeler
Çiftlik Bay: a sandier shore with restaurants, also a common boat-trip stop
Kızkumu: a natural sandbar in Orhaniye that lets you walk out into the sea
İncekum: pale sand and shallow water, popular with families
Our guide to the best beaches and bays in Marmaris covers 25 spots in detail, including which ones suit children and which you can reach without a car.
4. Try Scuba Diving
The clear, calm water around Marmaris makes it a good place for a first dive. On a full-day scuba diving trip from Marmaris, you make two dives. Beginners receive instruction on the boat and dive with an instructor in small groups; certified divers go down with the dive team. Hotel pickup from Marmaris and İçmeler, equipment and a sandwich lunch are included.
You don't need previous experience, but you do need to be comfortable in the water. Tell the operator about any medical conditions before booking.
5. Paddle a Calm River on a Canoeing Tour
If you want to be active without anything too demanding, a Marmaris canoeing tour is a gentle option. The river is about 20 minutes from town. Most of it is around 60 cm deep, reaching roughly 1.5 m at its deepest point, with no strong currents. Two guides accompany the group, and there is a safety briefing and a swimming break. The tour is designed for ages 7 to 70, and morning and afternoon departures are available.
6. Go Parasailing or Try Water Sports
The Uzunyalı and İçmeler seafronts are lined with water-sports operators. Options include parasailing behind a speedboat, jet ski rides, speedboat rides and inflatable rides such as the banana, ringo and fly fish. Each ride takes only a short time, so you can fit one in around a beach day. Browse water sports in Marmaris to compare options.
History, Culture and Things to Do in Marmaris Town Centre
Central Marmaris is compact. The castle, Old Town, bazaar and marina are all within walking distance of each other, so you can cover the main town-centre attractions in a single day without a car.
7. Visit Marmaris Castle and Archaeology Museum
Marmaris Castle sits on the peninsula above the harbour. Its history goes back to antiquity, but the structure you see today was largely shaped by rebuilding work during Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent's campaign against Rhodes in 1522. The Archaeology Museum inside displays finds from excavations around the region, and the walls give you one of the best views over the harbour and bay.
Allow 1–2 hours and wear comfortable shoes for the steps and stone surfaces. In summer, go in the morning or late afternoon. Opening hours and ticket prices can change, so check them before you go.
8. Walk Through the Old Town and See Hafsa Sultan Caravanserai
The Old Town wraps around the castle: whitewashed houses, narrow stone lanes, bougainvillea and small views over the bay. It is a living neighbourhood rather than an open-air museum, so be respectful of residents. Nearby, the Hafsa Sultan Caravanserai is one of the town's notable Ottoman-era buildings, linked to the preparations for the same Rhodes campaign.
Walk downhill from the castle towards the bazaar or the marina. Some lanes are steep, which can be difficult with pushchairs.
9. Shop in the Marmaris Grand Bazaar
Between the Old Town and the marina, the bazaar's covered passages are full of shops selling spices, Turkish delight, textiles, leather goods, jewellery and souvenirs. It gets livelier in the evening. Ask about prices, quality and return conditions before you buy; bargaining practices vary from shop to shop.
If you'd like a local to show you around, see our Marmaris bazaar tours or read about the Marmaris bazaar shopping tour.
10. Explore the Ancient City of Amos
On a hillside between Turunç and Kumlubük, the ancient city of Amos has a small theatre, sections of city wall and a wide view over the gulf. It is a compact site rather than a large archaeological complex, and the view is a big part of the appeal. The path is rocky and exposed, so go in the morning or before sunset, and bring water and sturdy shoes. Combine it with a swim at Amos Bay or Kumlubük.
11. Take a Boat to Sedir Island and Cleopatra Beach
Sedir Island, in the Gulf of Gökova north of Marmaris, combines the remains of the ancient city of Kedrai (city walls, a theatre and an agora) with a beach known for its unusual sand. Boats leave from the piers around Çamlı. The sandy area is protected: you must follow the rules, stay out of restricted sections and never take sand away. You can pair it with a swim at nearby İncekum Beach.
Nature, Viewpoints and Outdoor Adventures
12. Go on a Jeep Safari into the Bozburun Peninsula
A jeep safari is one of the most popular Marmaris excursions if you want to see the countryside beyond the resort. Convoys of open jeeps drive through pine forests and dusty off-road tracks around the Bozburun Peninsula and Marmaris National Park. Along the way there are water fights between the jeeps, a swimming break and lunch. Some routes also include a swim near a waterfall.
Expect dust and water: wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, bring a towel and keep your phone in a waterproof bag. Compare routes on our Marmaris jeep safari tours page.
13. See Kızkumu, Turgut Waterfall and Bayır Village
This is a good one-day route on the western side of Marmaris. At Kızkumu, you walk along the shallow sandbar into the sea. Turgut Waterfall is a series of small cascades and cool pools under the pines, a refreshing stop on a hot day, though the rocks are slippery. Bayır Village is known for its huge plane tree, village square and local products such as pine honey. Many jeep safaris and village tours stop here.
14. Walk in Günnücek or Hike to Nimara Cave
For a short escape from the busy seafront, Günnücek, close to the town centre, has shaded areas of sweetgum trees and coastal views in Marmaris National Park. For a more demanding walk, the route around Paradise Island (Yıldız Island) leads to Nimara Cave. The terrain, heat and waymarking can make it challenging, so carry water, wear shoes with good grip and avoid remote trails alone.
15. Go White-Water Rafting on the Dalaman River
If you want a bigger adrenaline rush than a jeep safari, the Dalaman River rafting trip from Marmaris covers a 12 km route with class 2 and class 3 rapids. Breakfast, lunch, equipment, a guide and insurance are included. It is a full-day trip because of the drive to the rafting area, and age limits apply, so check them on the tour page before you book.
16. Watch the Sunset from a Viewpoint
In town, the castle walls and the marina are the easiest places to watch the sun go down over the bay. On the southern coast, the area around Amos offers wide views over the gulf. If you have a car, the Söğüt–Saranda coast and the Selimiye waterfront on the Bozburun Peninsula have some of the most memorable sunsets in the region, but the return drive is long, dark and winding.
Family-Friendly Things to Do in Marmaris
17. Spend a Day at Aqua Dream Water Park
For a break from the beach, Aqua Dream sits on a hillside above town. It has a wave pool, a rafting slide, a kamikaze slide, a black hole and multi-lane slides, with lifeguards, changing cabins and lockers. Aqua Dream water park tickets can be booked with transfers. Food and drinks are not included, and height limits apply on some slides.
18. Enjoy an Evening at the Marina and 19 May Youth Square
Marmaris Marina comes alive after sunset, with excursion boats, restaurants and cafés lining the waterfront. Nearby, 19 May Youth Square is a large pedestrian area with seasonal fountain shows, an easy evening out with children. For a calmer evening, the İçmeler promenade has restaurants and shops in one place.
Relax and Recharge
19. Treat Yourself to a Turkish Bath
A Turkish bath (hammam) is a good way to spend a slower day, especially after a few days of sun. The Marmaris Turkish bath and spa experience includes the sauna, steam room and salt room, a 40-minute foam and peeling massage, a 50-minute full-body oil massage and a face mask, with transport included. Bring swimwear and a change of clothes. For more options, see our Marmaris spa and Turkish bath listings.
Marmaris Nightlife and Evening Activities
20. Go Out on Bar Street
Marmaris has one of the liveliest nightlife scenes on the Turkish coast, and most of it is concentrated on Bar Street, below the Old Town. You'll find bars, live music and nightclubs side by side. Music styles, entry policies and prices vary, so walk the street first before choosing a venue. If you'd rather have a quiet drink, the marina and the Uzunyalı seafront are better options.
Local Food and Markets
21. Try Pine Honey, Seafood and Local Dishes
Marmaris is known for its pine honey, produced in the forests around the town. You can learn how it is made at Marmaris Honey House near Osmaniye Village, or buy it at village stalls on the Bozburun Peninsula. For seafood, the waterfront restaurants in Söğüt, Selimiye and Turunç are good choices for a long lunch or dinner. In town, look beyond the seafront menus: small places in the side streets often serve simpler Turkish food such as pide, köfte and gözleme.
22. Join a Local Village Experience
To see rural life beyond the resort, the Marmaris local village experience visits Bayır Village. The tour includes a traditional village house, a pine honey tasting, a waterfall stop and a traditional Turkish lunch. Hotel pickup and guiding are included, while drinks are extra.
Best Day Trips from Marmaris
The following excursions leave the Marmaris area entirely, so each needs a full day. Don't try to combine them with sightseeing in town.
23. Rhodes
The Greek island of Rhodes is close enough for a day trip by high-speed catamaran from Marmaris Port. The Marmaris to Rhodes day trip departs in the morning and gives you several hours of free time to explore the UNESCO-listed Old Town at your own pace. The day is unguided, hotel transfers are not included, and an international port tax is charged separately.
Because Rhodes is in Greece (EU), you need a passport and must meet the Schengen entry requirements for your nationality. Read our Marmaris to Rhodes trip FAQ before booking.
24. Dalyan and İztuzu Beach
Dalyan is known for the rock tombs of ancient Kaunos carved into the cliffs above the Dalyan River, its mud baths and İztuzu Beach. İztuzu is a long sandy beach and a protected nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). A typical day combines a river boat trip past the tombs with a swim at İztuzu. Because it involves both road and river travel, plan it as a separate day.
25. Pamukkale
Pamukkale's white travertine terraces and the ancient city of Hierapolis form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but they are a long drive inland from Marmaris. Expect a very early start and a late return. For a different view, you can see the terraces from a hot-air balloon at sunrise. Browse Pamukkale tours from Marmaris and read our Pamukkale travel guide to decide whether the journey is worth it for you.

Practical Tips for Visiting Marmaris
Best time to visit: June and September offer a good balance of warm sea and fewer crowds than July and August. April–May and October are better for walking, villages and history. In winter the town stays open, but boat trips and many beach businesses are limited.
Getting there: the nearest airport is Dalaman. Compare taxis, shuttles and private transfers in our Dalaman Airport to Marmaris transport guide.
Getting around: the town centre is walkable, and minibuses (dolmuş) connect Marmaris with İçmeler and nearby areas. For the Bozburun Peninsula and distant coves, a car or a tour with hotel transfers is more practical.
Plan around the heat: do sightseeing and walks early or late in the day, and spend the middle of the day in the sea or the shade.
Boat routes can change: wind and sea conditions can change swim stops. If a particular cove matters to you, confirm it with the operator.
Forest rules: in summer, some forest roads and picnic areas may close because of fire risk. Never light fires or leave glass or cigarette ends behind.
Carry some cash: it is useful for drinks on boats, small shops, minibuses and village stalls.
