What Is the Dim River?

The Dim River is an approximately 60-kilometre river that rises in the Taurus Mountains and reaches the Mediterranean just east of Alanya. Its cool water and green valley make it one of the region's most popular natural escapes, especially in July and August.

It is worth knowing that the Dim River is not a single attraction with one entrance. Restaurants, picnic areas and swimming platforms are spread along the valley road, each run by a different business. Upstream, the Dim Dam forms a reservoir, which is separate from the riverside restaurant area most visitors mean when they talk about "Dimçayı".

Things to Do at the Dim River

Have Lunch on a Platform over the River

The classic Dim River experience is a long lunch at one of the riverside restaurants, where tables and seating sit on wooden platforms over the flowing water. It is noticeably cooler than the coast, which is why families spend whole afternoons here in summer. Seating, entry and minimum-spend arrangements differ between restaurants, so ask before you sit down.

Swim in the Cold River Water

Many visitors come to cool off in the river. The water is much colder than the sea, which is refreshing on a hot day but can be a shock at first. Swim only in managed sections where the business permits entry, as depth and currents vary along the river. Keep a close eye on children at all times.

Visit Dim Cave

On a hillside east of Alanya, Dim Cave is known for its large chambers, stalactites and stalagmites, and a small lake at the end of the visitor route. The area around the entrance also has views over the coast, the Dim Valley and the Taurus Mountains. Inside there are steps and damp surfaces, so wear shoes with good grip. The cave and the river look close on a map, but mountain roads add travel time, so plan them together as a half-day or full-day route.

Join a Jeep Safari That Stops at the River

If you don't have a car, a jeep safari is the easiest way to see the Dim River along with the mountains above Alanya. Several safaris from Alanya include lunch by the river and a swimming break; see the comparison below.

Spend an Evening at the River

The Dim River is also a place for dinner. The Alanya night jeep safari and boat tour combines a sunset mountain safari and a boat cruise with dinner at the Dim River, running roughly from 18:30 to 23:30.

Dim River Jeep Safaris from Alanya

These jeep safaris all include hotel transfers from the Alanya area, lunch by the river and a swimming stop. They start at around 10:00, with hotel pickup earlier.

How to Get to the Dim River from Alanya

  • By car: head east from Alanya on the D400 coastal road towards Tosmur and Kestel, then follow the signs up the Dim valley road.

  • By public bus: local buses run from central Alanya towards the Dim valley. Check the current route and timetable locally.

  • By taxi: the simplest option if you are going for lunch; agree the return trip or ask the restaurant to call a taxi.

  • By tour: a jeep safari with hotel transfer covers the journey, lunch and the swim in one booking.

Tips for Visiting the Dim River

  • Ask about seating rules: some restaurants charge for platform seating or expect a minimum spend.

  • Bring swimwear and a towel: even if you don't plan to swim, you'll want to put your feet in.

  • Respect the currents: swim only where it is permitted and never let children swim unsupervised.

  • Wear shoes with grip: platforms, riverbanks and the cave can be wet and slippery.

  • Carry cash: useful for drinks, small shops and parking.

  • Combine it well: the Dim River and Dim Cave make a natural pair; add a viewpoint above Alanya if you're driving.

When to Visit the Dim River

The Dim River is at its best in summer, from June to September, when the contrast between the hot coast and the cold river water is greatest. Midday is the ideal time to be there, as the shaded platforms and cold water make the hottest hours comfortable. Outside summer, it is still a pleasant place for lunch in the valley, but the water is too cold for most swimmers.
