About this activity

Join a licensed guide on foot through Sultanahmet to see Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque up close and then descend into the columned Basilica Cistern.

Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque Guided Tour: Four Hours Through the Heart of Old Istanbul Ending Beneath the Basilica Cistern

Few square kilometres on earth hold as much history as Sultanahmet. On this morning walk a licensed guide links three monuments that span more than a thousand years: the Ottoman Blue Mosque, the Byzantine masterpiece of Hagia Sophia and the vast underground Basilica Cistern. Entry tickets for Hagia Sophia and the cistern are arranged in advance, so your time goes to the stories rather than the ticket office.

Gathering Where Chariots Once Raced

The group meets at the old Hippodrome of Constantinople, where crowds once cheered chariot races. Your guide brings the open square to life by pointing out the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius, the bronze Serpent Column and the octagonal German Fountain before leading you on.

Six Minarets and a Sea of Blue Tiles

Built for Sultan Ahmed I in the early seventeenth century, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque earned its popular name from the thousands of hand-painted Iznik tiles that line its interior. You step inside the prayer hall with your guide, learn how the six minarets caused a stir in their day and take in the light falling through hundreds of windows. Entry to the mosque is free of charge.

The Milestone at the Centre of an Empire

A short stroll leads past the remains of the Milion, the marker from which Byzantine road distances were once measured. It is a quiet reminder of how important this small patch of ground used to be.

Beneath Justinian's Floating Dome

Completed in 537, Hagia Sophia reigned as the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years and today serves as a working mosque. Foreign visitors enter through a separate entrance and explore from the upper gallery, which offers the finest views of the immense dome, the golden Deesis mosaic and graffiti scratched into the marble railing by a Viking visitor centuries ago.

A Cool Walk Through the Sunken Palace

Just across the street, steps lead down into the Basilica Cistern, a sixth-century reservoir held up by 336 marble columns. Your guide explains how it once stored water for the imperial palace and reveals the mystery of the two Medusa heads placed at the base of its columns. Afterwards there is free time to photograph the illuminated hall at your own pace.

How Your Morning Is Timed

The tour starts every day at 10:00 at the meeting point beside the Hippodrome and finishes at around 14:00 in Sultanahmet. The 10:00 start is the meeting time on site and not a hotel pickup time, because this tour does not include transfers. The order of the visits may change on the day depending on prayer times and queues.

Respectful Dress and Smart Preparation

Both mosques are active places of worship, so shoulders and knees must be covered and women need a headscarf. Mosque interiors can close briefly during prayers and on Fridays the Blue Mosque may stay closed to visitors around midday prayer. Comfortable shoes are essential as the route involves walking on cobblestones and stairs.

  • Expect security checks at the entrance of each monument
  • Mosque interiors may close during prayers and around Friday midday prayer
