About this activity

Join a Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque tour with a licensed guide then wander the Grand Bazaar on an easy morning with hotel transfers included.

Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque Tour Through the Heart of Old Istanbul

Two of the most celebrated domes on earth stand only a few hundred steps apart in Sultanahmet. This four-hour morning programme lets you experience both with a licensed guide before you lose yourself among the lanes of the Grand Bazaar. Transfers from central Istanbul hotels are part of the package, so the only thing left to plan is a comfortable pair of shoes.

Where Chariots Once Raced

Your guide gathers the group on Sultanahmet Square, laid out over the Byzantine Hippodrome. Standing beside the Egyptian Obelisk, the bronze Serpent Column and the German Fountain, you hear how this open ground served emperors and sultans as a stage for races, ceremonies and public life.

Six Minarets and a Sea of Blue Tiles

Step inside the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, raised between 1609 and 1616 and known worldwide as the Blue Mosque. Thousands of hand-painted İznik tiles, a cascade of domes and more than two hundred stained glass windows shape an interior that feels calm even when the square outside is busy. Entry is free and modest dress is required.

Fifteen Centuries Beneath a Floating Dome

Next comes Hagia Sophia, completed in 537 under Emperor Justinian and in turn a cathedral, an imperial mosque, a museum and once again a mosque since 2020. Visitors use a dedicated tourist entrance and follow a route along the upper gallery, where golden Byzantine mosaics sit close enough to study in detail. The gallery ticket is bought on site and is not part of the tour price.

A Labyrinth of Lanterns and Bargains

A short walk along the historic Divanyolu avenue brings you to the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest covered markets in the world with roughly 4,000 shops spread over more than sixty streets. Browse carpets, ceramics, lamps, spices and jewellery at your own pace, try a little friendly bargaining and meet the group again at the agreed gate.

Good to Know Before You Go

The 08:30 time marks the start of the activity in Sultanahmet; your hotel pickup happens earlier and is confirmed once your booking is made. The activity ends at around 12:30 and the return transfer follows, so the drop-off time depends on traffic and your hotel location. Mosques pause visits during prayer times, the Blue Mosque is closed to visitors on Friday mornings and the Grand Bazaar shuts on Sundays, which is why this tour runs from Monday to Saturday.

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup is earlier than the listed start time and is confirmed after your reservation
  • Women should bring a headscarf and everyone needs clothing that covers shoulders and knees
  • The Hagia Sophia gallery ticket is paid on site and is not part of the tour price
  • Mosque visits pause during prayer times and the Blue Mosque is closed on Friday mornings
  • Wear comfortable shoes because most of the route is covered on foot
  • Age policy: Adults 9+, children 3-8, infants 0-2.
