About this activity
Pamukkale and Salda Lake Tour from Side: White Stone Meets Blue Water
Some landscapes look invented until you stand in front of them. This full-day Pamukkale and Salda Lake Tour from Side takes you to two of them: a lake whose pale shoreline glows like a tropical lagoon and a hillside of snow-white calcium terraces crowned by a Roman spa city. Your entrance to Pamukkale and Hierapolis is already paid, the Salda Lake entry is covered, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at restaurants along the route. The only decision left is where to point your camera.
Leaving the Coast Before Dawn
The day starts early. Hotel pickup in Side and the neighbouring resort towns happens before the listed activity start time, and your exact pickup time is shared with you after you reserve. From there an air-conditioned coach leaves the Mediterranean behind and climbs into the Taurus Mountains while the sky slowly turns from grey to gold.
A Hearty Start in Korkuteli
After roughly two hours on the road the coach pulls into Korkuteli, where breakfast is waiting at a local restaurant. It is a relaxed stop to stretch your legs and gather energy for the hours ahead. Drinks beyond what is served with the meal are paid separately.
Salda Lake, the Turkish Maldives
Crossing the lake district of Burdur, you reach Salda Lake, often nicknamed the Turkish Maldives. Its shoreline is made of fine white mineral deposits, and the water shifts from turquoise to deep blue as the light changes. Scientists have even studied these minerals to compare them with rocks found in a crater on Mars. You have about an hour to stroll the shore, take photographs and swim where it is permitted.
Lunch in the Shadow of the Cotton Castle
A short drive brings you to the Pamukkale area, where lunch is served at a local restaurant before the main visit. Eating first means you can spend the afternoon on the terraces without watching the clock. Drinks with lunch are not included.
Barefoot on Frozen Waterfalls
Pamukkale means cotton castle in Turkish, and the name makes sense the moment you see it. For thousands of years warm, mineral-rich spring water has flowed down this slope, leaving cascades of white travertine and shallow turquoise basins behind. Shoes must come off on the terraces to protect the surface, so you walk barefoot across the warm stone, wade through the shallow pools and take in wide views over the valley below.
Echoes of Hierapolis
Just above the terraces lie the ruins of Hierapolis, an ancient spa city founded in the Hellenistic era and expanded under Roman rule. Together with Pamukkale it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide introduces the highlights, including the grand theatre, the city gates and one of the largest necropolises in Anatolia, before you carry on at your own pace.
An Optional Swim Among Ancient Columns
If you feel like swimming, Cleopatra's Antique Pool sits right beside the ruins. Its naturally warm water covers marble columns that toppled in an earthquake centuries ago, giving you the rare chance to float above genuine Roman remains. Entry to the pool is not included in the tour price and is paid on site, as are any drinks you order there.
Supper on the Road Back to Side
As the afternoon light fades, the coach heads south again. Dinner is served at a restaurant along the route, and then the journey continues to the coast. The listed end time marks the close of the activity; drop-off at your hotel follows afterwards and depends on traffic and your hotel location.
Included and Extra at a Glance
Your ticket covers hotel pickup and drop-off in the Side area, air-conditioned transport, a professional guide, breakfast, lunch, dinner, the Pamukkale and Hierapolis entrance ticket and the Salda Lake entrance. Cleopatra's Antique Pool entry and all drinks are paid separately, so bring some cash for these extras.

lovely day but the bus over the mountains is very long on a 5am start and we were exhausted by the afternoon. the dinner stop felt rushed.
